Crochet Unicorn
Mystical Creatures Crochet
My rating ⭐⭐⭐
My first project from the Mystical Creatures crochet kit was a unicorn.
The kit included wool, a 2.75 mm crochet hook, two pairs of eyes, and a plastic needle. I prefer an ergonomic hook, so I used a 3 mm hook instead—my first mistake. I made the head first, but ran out of white wool halfway through the body and had to switch to pink for the rest of the body and the ears. That likely wouldn’t have happened if I’d used the smaller hook.
My second mistake was not using stitch markers to mark both eyes in the same round. I tried to guesstimate their placement after finishing the head, which was another mistake. Once the head was stuffed, the eyes ended up completely wonky.
My third mistake was not counting the rows as I made the legs, so one leg ended up longer than the others. I tried to compensate while sewing it on. What I didn’t like about this pattern was having to crochet a flat piece for the body base and then awkwardly attach each leg. I eventually figured it out, but I would have preferred a simpler pattern.
I'm happy with how the mane and tail turned out. I added a few extra pieces to help cover my wonky ears.
Overall, the wool quality wasn’t as good as the Rico wool I usually use. Some parts felt awkward, and I had to redo the ears about five times before they looked right. A video to accompany the pattern would be a game changer.
